Wildfire Planning for Steel Buildings in California
For property owners in Northern California, wildfire safety is a primary planning consideration. A steel frame is only one part of the exterior assembly and does not answer the site’s ember, flame, access, or vegetation questions by itself.
Steel framing does not by itself make a building wildfire-resistant. Roof covering, vents, openings, siding, attachments, vegetation, access, water, and local WUI requirements all matter. Check the applicable permit requirements and fire-hazard maps before fixing the design.

1. What Steel Does—and Does Not—Change
Steel framing and steel siding are non-combustible materials, but the building can still be exposed through roof coverings, vents, doors, windows, sealants, stored contents, attached structures, and nearby vegetation. Confirm the product’s actual fire classifications rather than treating the word “steel” as a complete fire rating.
- Materials: Check the listed classification for roof covering, wall panels, vents, doors, windows, trim, and any insulation or interior finish.
- Openings: Ember entry often depends on vents, eaves, door gaps, damaged seals, and other openings rather than the frame alone.
- Site interface: Access, defensible space, water supply, vegetation, adjacent buildings, and stored fuels remain separate risk questions.
2. Preventing Ember Ignition
Wind-borne embers can reach a structure before or after the main fire front. Treat the roof, vents, openings, attached materials, stored contents, and surrounding site as separate review items.
- Eaves and ridges: Review closures, soffits, vents, and trim details for ember exposure. Do not assume a generic “tight” detail meets a local WUI requirement.

3. Defensible space and the surrounding site
While steel itself doesn’t burn, items stored inside and immediately surrounding the structure can. Creating defensible space is essential:
- Zone 0 (0-5 feet): Clear all leaves, mulch, woodpiles, and dry vegetation from the perimeter of your steel building.
- Zone 1 (5-30 feet): Keep trees trimmed, grass mowed short, and store flammable chemicals (like gasoline or propane) in sealed containers away from the structure.
- Door and window seals: Check weatherstripping, thresholds, vents, and other openings for gaps or damage before the fire season.
