The Danger of Metal Building Condensation
Steel is an excellent conductor of temperature. When warm, moist air inside the building comes into contact with cold steel panels on the outside (especially during early morning temperature drops or in high-humidity climates), condensation forms rapidly.
Without a proper vapor barrier, this moisture drips from the ceiling like indoor rain, ruining stored items, accelerating rust, and promoting mold. A minimum of a Single Bubble Foil vapor barrier is highly recommended for all enclosed steel structures, regardless of the climate.
Comparing Insulation Types
Choosing the right insulation depends entirely on how you plan to use the space:
- Bubble Foil (Single or Double): Rated around R-4 to R-8. Extremely thin and cost-effective. It acts as an excellent radiant barrier (reflecting heat in summer) and a flawless vapor barrier to stop condensation. Ideal for standard garages and agricultural storage.
- Woven Fiberglass (2" or 3"): Rated R-7 to R-10. Comes with a heavy-duty white vinyl facing (WMP-VR-R). Excellent for workshops where you might run a space heater and need thermal retention in winter.
- Closed-Cell Spray Foam: Provides roughly R-7 per inch of thickness. While expensive, it is the absolute best option for Barndominiums and habitable spaces as it completely seals the envelope and prevents thermal bridging across the steel frame.
