A warranty is a contract with a defined provider, covered failure, remedy, term, and set of exclusions. It does not validate the structural adequacy of a building, replace engineering, or guarantee that every form of deterioration will be repaired.
Terms vary substantially among manufacturers, dealers, installers, coating suppliers, door companies, and finance providers. Read the warranty offered with the exact quote rather than relying on a typical number of years.

1. Structural and Rust-Through Coverage
Rust-through coverage generally addresses perforation of specified framing members during a stated period. It may exclude surface corrosion, panel corrosion, coastal exposure, chemicals, condensation, cut edges, damage, soil contact, or improper drainage.
Ask:
- Which frame members and coatings are covered?
- Does coverage depend on frame gauge or a particular product line?
- Is labor, freight, removal, reinstallation, or consequential damage included?
- Is the remedy repair, replacement material, credit, or a prorated amount?
A longer term is not automatically better if the covered failure and remedy are narrow.
2. Paint and Coating Coverage
Panel coating warranties may address specific levels of peeling, cracking, chalking, or color change. The performance period can vary by coating, color, orientation, environment, building use, and distance from corrosive exposure.
SMP and PVDF are coating families, not universal warranty packages. Compare the actual coating specification and written coverage, including measurement methods and exclusions.
3. Workmanship and Installation Coverage
Installation coverage comes from the party responsible for the work and may be separate from material warranties. Confirm whether it includes:
- panel alignment and attachment;
- trim and flashing;
- leaks and their stated exclusions;
- frame assembly and anchoring;
- doors, windows, and third-party accessories;
- travel, labor, and response time for a service visit.
Document visible damage, incomplete work, and deviations before final acceptance.
4. Wind-Related Coverage and Exclusions
Do not treat a “wind warranty” as a substitute for a design rating. Determine:
- which wind-speed definition and design criteria apply;
- whether the complete configuration—including doors, walls, anchors, foundation, and installation—is covered;
- what physical failure triggers a remedy;
- which storms, debris impacts, modifications, maintenance conditions, or occupancy states are excluded.
The building’s approved engineering and the warranty answer different questions: one documents design assumptions; the other describes a contractual remedy.

Keep a Warranty Record
Save the signed quote, warranty booklet, product and coating specification, approved drawings, installer scope, inspection approvals, photographs before and after installation, maintenance notes, and every service request. Record the date, location, weather or exposure event, visible condition, and steps taken to prevent further damage. A clear record does not guarantee coverage, but it helps separate a material defect, installation issue, maintenance problem, storm damage, and an unapproved modification when a claim is reviewed.
Before accepting a warranty, ask who receives the claim, what evidence is required, how quickly the provider responds, whether labor and travel are included, and whether the warranty transfers if the property is sold.
