Agricultural structures serve different uses: machinery, livestock, hay, feed, tools, chemicals, commodities, vehicles, and mixed operations. The use determines access, enclosure, ventilation, drainage, corrosion, fire, sanitation, and approval questions.
Separate the farm uses
Before selecting one footprint, list what the building will contain and what must move through it:

- livestock, bedding, feed, water, shade, and ventilation;
- hay, grain, fertilizer, chemicals, or other materials;

Combining incompatible uses can create problems with dust, moisture, corrosion, fire, animals, ventilation, and access.

Center units, lean-tos, raised roofs, and continuous roof lines can be arranged in several ways. The roof shape changes drainage, height, framing, snow accumulation, and enclosure details; it does not by itself establish capacity.
Site and code questions
Agricultural zoning or a farm use does not automatically remove other requirements. Confirm:
- city versus county jurisdiction;
- allowed use, accessory-structure definitions, and any exemptions;
- setbacks, lot coverage, height, easements, and fire access;
- flood, wildfire, drainage, soil, and environmental conditions;

Write the operating brief
Before comparing spans or roof styles, describe how people, animals, equipment, materials, and waste move through the site. A short operating brief helps keep a storage bay from being evaluated as if it were a livestock area or occupied workspace.

If one structure serves several uses, draw the boundaries and keep incompatible activities separated. Future conversion from an open shelter to an occupied, conditioned, or chemical-storage space should be treated as a new review rather than assumed to be covered by the original layout.
Design and maintenance considerations
Plan wall and roof materials around manure, fertilizer, salt, humidity, dust, wash-down, and impact. Provide ventilation and drainage that match the use. Keep equipment movement clear of posts, braces, doors, and low roof edges. Protect openings and lower walls from animal or machinery impact where needed.
